Skylar Tibbits explains how we see self-assembly at work in biology and chemistry -- and even in our future technologies.
June 3 (Bloomberg) --- What if if a table or a bridge could build itself? If researchers at the self-assembly lab at MIT have their way, parts will someday put themselves together. Skylar Tibbits shows Bloomberg what a self-assembling future could look like.
At MIT, we pursue research, education, and innovation with a passion for serious impact. We have a record of transforming society for the better-and we are just getting started. As we look to the horizon, we see a future of important challenges and inspiring opportunities. With your help, we can build a better world.
Skylar Tibbits and his team at MIT's Self Assembly Lab are working on programmable materials to create 4-D printing. What exactly is 4-D printing? The Self Assembly Lab works to create physical objects that can self-construct from stored memory inside their materials, adding what is commonly referred to as the 4th dimension - time - to 3-D printing.
In collaboration with Skylar Tibbits' Self Assembly Lab at MIT, Steelcase has unveiled a new method of 3D printing called "rapid liquid printing". Especially for a furniture and interior design company like Steelcase, this technique offers a process that competes with the speed, size, and materials available to existing 3D printing methods.
